News Update – 17/10/2025

Dear Parent / Colleague / Board Member,

This was maths week in school and children were engaged in mathematical challenges.

Ethos.

On Wednesday the girls and boys from Rg 6 had their Commitment ceremony / Ceremony of light in advance of their Confirmation with Fr Toomey at Fourmilewater Church. This weekend, it is the turn of the Rg 2 class to begin their Holy Communion preparation by participating in the 9 am mass in FMW. Follow instructions given by Miss O’Keeffe / Mrs Coffey. Thanks to Áine Horgan Rg 6, who represented the school in Ardfinnan on Sunday last during the special event to mark the inaugural Feast Day of St. Carlo Acutis.

INTO G.A.A.

On Monday, the boys and girls both won their respective semifinals in the Cumann na mBunscol INTO football competition. They both play tomorrow morning in the finals at Dungarvan GAA Club grounds. (X35K258) The girls will take on Scoil Garbháin in the A final at 10:35 am and the boys will take on Cappoquin in the A Plate Final at 11:20 am. We are asking pupils to be at the ground 30 mins before throw in. (Girls at 10:05 am and boys at 10:50 am) Please be aware that there is a charge of €5 for adults on Finals Day. A note was sent home on Thursday by Miss Denmead. Best wishes to them both and also the Nire Senior footballers who take on Gaultier in the Co. Senior Football Semi Final at 7 pm Saturday evening in the Fraher Field.

Athletics.

On Wednesday we travelled to TUS Sports Campus, to participate in the Clonmel Athletic Club Cross Country Challenge. We had 32 runners represent the school from Rg 3- Rg 6. We won Gold in both the Girls Rg 3/4 and Rg 5/6 team races. We had 7 individual medalists on the day; Annabel, Ellen, Saorlaith, Eve, Abbie with Eimear & Áine both finishing second in their respective races. Thanks to the P.A. who sponsored the admission fee and to Johnny / John McCarra for transport. We made good use of the singlets and jerseys recently sponsored by Stephanie Byrne Fitness and Darren Guiry DGB Construction respectively. Please check social media for photos.

HSE.

The nurse from the HSE visited on Monday last to assess the boys and girls from Junior Infants in relation to sight and hearing testing. The HSE will deal directly with parents on these findings. If you have any concerns, please liaise with class teacher as we are not privy to the results (GDPR). Owing to the much-publicised reduction in Ophthalmology services in South Tipperary of late, it may be prudent for any families to follow up on these issues privately, if they arise.

Food Dudes.

The boys and girls have been sampling fruit and vegetables all week courtesy of the Food Dudes healthy Eating Programme. This has been in addition to the Hot School Meals programme which was launched almost a year ago at our school. Thanks to Miss Condon for organising.

Library Visit.

We had visits from both local libraries this week. Sarah from Dungarvan and Ann and Louise from Clonmel. They read to classes, while encouraging our pupils to become members. Well done again those to those who participated in the Summer Stars Reading Programme.

Photography Packs.

We have distributed the photography packs and await their return. Thank you for engaging. There is no compulsion to purchase, but please return the packs none the less by Monday. The sooner we get them back; the sooner we can distribute the printed photos.

Plastic Bottle and Can Collection.

The P.A. has initiated a drive to raise funds from the collection of cans and plastic bottles with the return logo. This will take place on Sat 25th Oct 9-12 noon. Bags can be dropped off at the school during this time but can also be brought to school anytime from Monday next. Thank you in advance for your support! Please see poster on our social media page.

BRAG.

Thanks to Ballymacarbry Road Action Group, who this week provided us with Hi Visibility vests for our staff and also some hi-vis bags for our pupils. It is important for adults and children to wear these vests while out walking. “Be Safe – Be Seen”

Bingo.

The Community Centre Committee has included us as one of the beneficiaries of its popular Bingo Nights. We will receive proceeds from the event to be held there later tonight. Eyes down at 8pm.

Halloween Build Up.

The PA will hold a Halloween Costume Exchange tomorrow morning between 10-12 noon in the Community Centre, where costumes can be traded. We ask pupils to dress up on Friday next for Mid Term. School will close on Friday at 2/3 pm and will reopen on Monday 3rd November at 9:20 am.
